The Conference
Conference Format
Most of the conference will be organised according to “Korpi's rules,” which have made RC19 meetings famous for their intellectual liveliness and seriousness. The rules are named for Walter Korpi, past president of RC 19:
- papers are circulated (and read) in advance;
- at the conference each paper is briefly introduced and commented upon by a discussant;
- the author has a limited time to react to the discussant's presentation, so as to leave most of the time for a general discussion.
It assumed that all papers have been read in advance. Thus, long summaries of the argument are avoided and the emphasis is on the discussion!
Korpi’s rules require that those who accept a place on the program make a commitment to completing and posting their paper in time for others to read it and to come prepared to discuss it.
Participants may expect to serve as discussant for another paper, and to open the floor with an incisive and fair assessment of its strengths and weaknesses. Completed papers are due July 15, 2009 and circulated to conference participants via the conference website.
